Project Overview

 

A Polish wholesaler specializing in sustainable packaging needed a reliable manufacturing partner for a customized bamboo cutlery range. The project included bamboo knives, forks and spoons, each with strict requirements for weight, dimensions and functional performance.

The existing knife and fork were close to the required specifications, but the natural weight variation of bamboo needed to be evaluated and controlled. The spoon presented a greater challenge because the existing design could not provide the required bowl width and capacity.

Through specification review, sample testing, dimensional adjustments and custom mold development, Ancheng established a workable solution for all three products. The customer approved the samples and placed a formal bulk order for the complete bamboo cutlery range.

 

Customer Background

 

The customer is a Polish wholesaler supplying sustainable packaging products to business buyers. Its end customer had established detailed specifications for the bamboo cutlery and required the products to remain within defined dimensional and performance parameters.

Because the products were intended for an established supply program, approximate visual similarity was not sufficient. The customer needed measurable specifications, samples for evaluation and supporting compliance documentation before confirming the order.

 

Customer Requirements

 

The requested bamboo cutlery range consisted of three products.

 

1. Bamboo Knife

 

- Minimum weight: 2.5 g 
- Preferred weight: approximately 2.7 g 
- Knife blade width: at least 50 mm

 

2. Bamboo Fork

 

- Minimum weight: 2.7 g 
- Preferred weight: approximately 2.9 g 
- Tine length: 28 mm

 

3. Bamboo Spoon

 

- Minimum weight: 2.9 g 
- Preferred weight: approximately 3.0 g 
- Spoon bowl width: 33.5–35 mm 
- Target capacity: 5–7 ml

The customer also needed clarification regarding dimensional tolerances, mold ownership, production capacity and PPWR-related documentation.

 

The Challenge

 

1. Managing Natural Bamboo Weight Variation

 

Bamboo is a natural material. Its density and weight can vary according to moisture content, growing conditions and the position from which it is cut within the bamboo culm.

Initial evaluation showed that the bamboo knives and forks met the dimensional requirements, but individual product weights were not completely uniform. Most pieces reached the requested weight, while a small number were slightly below the specified minimum.

The customer understood the natural characteristics of bamboo, but its end customer still required a controlled and measurable tolerance. Ancheng therefore needed to provide actual sampling data instead of relying only on a general explanation of material variation.

 

2. Achieving the Required Spoon Width and Capacity

 

The existing bamboo spoon did not provide the required bowl width or the target capacity of 5–7 ml.

Increasing the external width alone would not fully resolve the issue. The bowl profile, forming depth, overall strength and production consistency also needed to be considered. A customized spoon and dedicated tooling solution were therefore required.

 

Ancheng’s Solution

 

1. Data-Based Weight Evaluation

 

Ancheng evaluated 100 bamboo knives and 100 bamboo forks to establish the actual weight distribution of the existing products.

The results allowed both parties to compare the requested minimum weights with real production data. Ancheng also explained how bamboo density affects individual product weight without necessarily reducing the strength or functional performance of the cutlery.

This data-based review converted a general concern about bamboo variation into a measurable discussion. Following the evaluation and sample review, the customer accepted a practical natural weight variation of approximately 15–20%.

The agreed tolerance also provided clearer criteria for evaluating subsequent bulk production.

 

2. Separate Verification for Each Product

 

The knife, fork and spoon were evaluated separately rather than treated as one standard cutlery set.

The bamboo knife and fork already met or closely matched the dimensional requirements, including the minimum knife blade width and the specified fork tine length. This allowed Ancheng to retain the suitable existing designs while concentrating development work on the spoon.

For the spoon, the factory first evaluated whether the existing tooling could be adjusted to increase the bowl width. Sample dimensions were checked with measuring equipment, and the relationship between bowl width, capacity and product strength was reviewed.

 

3. Custom Bamboo Spoon Development

 

Because the standard spoon could not fully meet the required width and capacity, Ancheng proposed developing a dedicated mold.

The customized spoon development focused on:

- Maintaining the required spoon bowl width 
- Increasing the usable bowl capacity 
- Preserving sufficient strength for normal use 
- Establishing repeatable dimensions for bulk production 
- Producing samples for customer approval before mass production

Before the customer confirmed the mold, Ancheng also provided information concerning the expected development schedule, production capacity and mold ownership arrangements.

 

4. Sampling and Technical Communication

 

Ancheng arranged samples of the bamboo knife, fork and spoon for evaluation. After the products arrived, the customer and Ancheng held a video meeting to review the specifications, natural weight tolerance and spoon design.

The customer confirmed that the knife and fork met the project requirements. Further feedback on the spoon width and capacity was incorporated into the final solution.

Close coordination between Ancheng’s business, technical and factory teams allowed measurement results, mold options and customer feedback to be reviewed efficiently throughout the sampling process.

 

5. PPWR-Related Documentation Support

 

During the project, the customer raised questions concerning the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation.

Ancheng responded promptly and supplied the requested PPWR-related compliance declaration, helping the customer continue its internal review without delaying the project.

Project Result

 

The final samples met the customer’s requirements for the bamboo cutlery program. The customer accepted the agreed natural weight tolerance and confirmed the proposed specifications for the bamboo knife, fork and customized spoon.

Following sample approval, the customer placed a formal bulk order covering all three products:

- Bamboo knives 
- Bamboo forks 
- Custom bamboo spoons

The project enabled the customer to move forward with a complete bamboo cutlery range supported by measurable specifications, customized tooling and the requested compliance documentation.
